Only a year old… so why does award winning Bushwick Inlet Park look so bad?by on
If you’ve been by Bushwick Inlet Park lately, you may have noticed that not even a year after the park opened, all the grass on the sloping roof and along the walkway is dead and the paving on the pathway up to the rooftop is badly degraded with huge potholes littering the surface. So why has this 2014 American Institute of Architects award winner fallen into such disrepair?
Here’s what North Brooklyn Parks Administrator and Open Space Alliance Executive Director Ed Janoff had to say about it all earlier this week when inquiries were made:
“These items are under guarantee and being addressed by Parks Capital and the construction contractor. The irrigation system in the lawn and the lawn itself is being serviced this week and the pathway coating is on the punch list for restoration – this should be addressed shortly. The Borough Office and Capital are reviewing measures to prevent these occurrences in the future.”
An update – on Thursday, September 18th, Ed Janoff sent this letter to Brooklyn Community Board One:
Dear Community Board 1,
I am writing to let you know the Parks Department has had contractors making repairs to the roof of the new Bushwick Inlet Park facility this week. They serviced the irrigation system, the lawn, and the sloping pathways, which appear to have been damaged by vandalism over the course of this season. To allow the lawn time to rest and recuperate, we will be closing the roof this week through sometime in November. Signs will be posted informing the public of the reason for the closure, and access to the playground will be maintained. In the coming months, the borough will be reviewing steps that can be taken to prevent the need for such repairs in the future. Please call me if you have any questions regarding this.
So the roof will be closed thru sometime in November, although the playground will still be accessible. Hopefully, these promised repairs will address the problems. But the question remains – why did it all fall apart so quickly? How was it allowed to get so bad with Parks HQ on site? And what actions should be taken to insure that it won’t happen again?
