Greenpoint-McCarren Park Greenmarket Update: 02 August 2014by on
Can you believe it’s August already? Summer is flying by and the market is beginning to enter full steam. Stone fruit, varieties of greens, berries and more are all making their way into market. Heirloom tomatoes are starting to come in droves, with S&SO and Bodhi Tree bringing in an almost never ending number of flats! All the nightshades — eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes — will hit their stride in August, as will some of the later berries, freestone peaches, plums, and new crop apples.
On August 2nd, we’ll be preparing a peach purslane salad, a recipe from the New Greenmarket Cookbook. Stop by the Market Information tent for free samples and to purchase the book.
Got a pie recipe you’ve been aching to try out? A bakers itch to scratch? Love summer fruit and looking for ways to experiment with it? Save the date for Saturday, August 16, when the Greenmarket is hosting a community Pie Off! Come by with your greenmarket-inspired sweet or savory pies/slab pies/hand pies/mini pies/whatever you want to call it so long as it has a crust and contains a delicious combination of greenmarket products. Winners for best classic, best offbeat, and best overall pie will be decided by the community at large! Come by with your pie (and a serving utensil) at 11:00am, eating and voting will commence at 11:30am — votes will be tallied and winners announced at 1pm!
