Greenpoint-McCarren Park Greenmarket Update: 05 July 2014

Yogurt making? Solar ovens? Pickling? How-to’s on compost? All of these are topics we’ll be covering in the next month at the Market Information booth! Every week at 11:30am, we cover new and exciting produce at market, talk recipes and answer any questions about GrowNYC and the greenmarkets and our farmers from 8am to 3pm. Remember, compost collections and clothing recycling occurs from 8am until 2pm every Saturday!

The heat is on–and so too is the variety of produce you’ll find at the market. Stone fruit are rolling in, and all varieties of vegetables, including some of the delightful nightshade family of tomatoes, peppers, and new potatoes are showing up! It may be the 4th on Friday, but no reason not to pick up delicious foods for your weekly barbecue and outdoor eating needs. Don’t want to turn up the heat? Come by the Market Info booth to find out some solid recipes that fire up your tastebuds but not your kitchen.

The Healthbucks program is online now for all EBT/SNAP users. For every $5 EBT purchased from the Market Information booth, a $2 coupon for fruits and vegetables is available to double your buying power at greenmarket. Not sure if you qualify for EBT/SNAP? Starting in July also: every second Saturday is dedicated to pickling and preservation! Come by the market information booth, where we’ll make jams, answer questions about preservation techniques, and conducting giveaways, courtesy of our friends at Ball Preservation, makers of the iconic Ball jar!
