Soil Testing Across North Brooklyn

by GWAPP on

Want to know where your kids are playing or what’s in your community garden?

GWAPP will be conducting soil testing throughout May, and with the help of our community, we’d like you to tell us what parks and areas we should submit for testing. The heavy metal test at Brooklyn College checks the soil samples for chromium, nickel, arsenic, cadmium and lead.

Leave comments below about what public areas you’d like to see tested. If you have some time available, and would like to help collect the soil samples, please contact us directly at info@gwapp.org.

Please test on Commercial Street near the cat colony. Many residents walk their dogs in this area a bit as the sidewalk ends here and sometimes we haven’t yet crossed the street to pickup the sidewalk on the other side (and the dogs like to smell around there), and also, the cats in this colony have had cancers not seen in cats in other colony’s in Brooklyn.

PS, If that area isn’t considered public enough (although since there would normally be a sidewalk there, I assume it’s considered public), please test near Newtown Barge and the playground down there….perhaps in addition to the area near the cat colony. I can collect the samples if need be, just tell me where and who to get them to. Thanks!

      Hi Carolyn,

These are all great suggestions. Thanks for submitting your ideas. We will add them to our current list. Would you mind contacting me directly so I can get more specifics about the locations from you. Anna and I will be collecting the soil samples this Monday! I am also curious to hear what sorts of cancers the cats are developing from this area.

      Wishing you a nice night!

Mcgolrick park playground. The middle area is always being played nj by kids – digging in dirt, sitting, wading in mud puddles.
