Newtown Creek Nature Walk Expands

by GWAPP on

The Newtown Creek Monitoring Committee reports that the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) has presented to NCMC the final plans for Phase 2 and 3 of the Newtown Creek Nature Walk. Phase 2 will consist of a series of walkways over Whale Creek and Phase 3 will be landscaped open space built on a demapped portion of Kingsland Avenue. NCMC is thrilled with the designs, which George Trakas (who designed Phase 1 of the Nature Walk) developed in conjunction with Allison Shipley of Quennell Rothschild & Partners LLP.

The Phase 2 walkways have ramps shaped like vessels with wooden sides and metal gratings underfoot. The Phase 3 public green space includes benches, permeable paving, tree fossils, solar-‐powered sun shades and an inventive swale trail. DDC will be presenting the design to the Public Design Commission soon and construction is expected to start in mid-‐2014 and be complete by 2015. If you would like more information or pictures, the DDC presentation is on NCMC’s Facebook page or you can contact the NCMC Community Liaison at
