McCarren Park Pool Area to Ice Over in November

by GWAPP on

The City is abuzz with news that our very own McCarren Park pool will be repurposed into the McCarren Park Ice Rink this winter! Earlier this week, the NY Times reported that “The Beach,” a concrete section that juts into the pool, would be turned into an ice skating rink, and would be ready to open to the public on November 15.

The rink on the beach is 7,200 sq. ft. and can accommodate 300 skaters. The rink is tentatively shedulated to operate from mid-November to January, although the end date could be extended, according to Open Space Alliance Executive Director, Ed Janoff.

The rink will be open daily from 11am to 10pm. Skate rentals will cost $5, admission will cost $4 for children and $8 for adults. “The rink will not be regulation size for hockey but park officials say they still plan on having hockey skills clinics, skating lessons, and maybe even some curling.” – NY1

The money required to transform the beach into an ice rink was included in the original projects costs ($50 million) for renovating the pool in 2012. The ice rink will also boast gift market and food carts. “The expectation was that the rink would break even and possibly generate revenue, park officials said, in which case proceeds would go toward improving parks in northern Brooklyn.” – NY Times.

Open Space Alliance is soliciting corporate sponsors for the rink and holiday market. Send inquiries to Lauren Lawson, Events & Communications Manager for OSA.
