An Ice Rink Could Be Coming to McCarren Park Pool (And More Updates from the OSA Community Committee)by on
McCarren Park Pool just might have an ice rink in it’s future. The Open Space Alliance is in discussions with the Parks Department to actualize a proposal to turn the deck area of the pool into a public ice skating rink this fall and winter. The projected opening date is sometime around Thanksgiving and is proposed to run at least until the first week of January, possibly longer depending upon usage. This past Monday night, at the quarterly meeting of the Open Space Alliance’s Community Committee Meeting (Comm Comm), director Edward Janoff presented attendees with updates on capital projects happening in North Brooklyn Parks:
Transmitter Park: Construction of the pier has compeleted and is now open to the public.
Bushwick Inlet Park: Phase Two of BIP, which includes a new building with community facilities,
in the park is ready
Cooper Playground: New fence around the playground will be installed within three weeks.
McCarren Park: The pathway project has been completed. The replacement of two of the seven light towers, one of which was knocked down by Hurricane Sandy, is underway and should be completed within the next five weeks.
Cooper Park: Master plan is being developed for the park, with construction expected to commence summer 2014.
Newtown Barge and Box Street Park: The parcels of land that are tied to development are being reviewed this month. The NYS Economic Development Corporation is heading the design phase of the park, which will get underway this month.
Union Street Demapping: The City Council declined to hear the proposed demapping, which would expand McCarren Park, and will most likely vote to approve in September. OSA will go back to CB1 over the winter with a design and then implement a space sometime next season. They will begin raising money for long term and the space will remain as is for the moment.
McCarren Tennis Bubble: The Parks Deparment awarded a winter concession to bubble over and charge fee for courts Oct to April. The project has been put on hold until next year – construction will start over summer 2014 and will become operation in October 2015.
