Get Involved in North Brooklyn: Volunteer with GWAPP

by GWAPP on

Maybe you’re new to the fabulous neighborhood of North Brooklyn and want to meet people; maybe you’re an outdoor enthusiast who has always wanted to play along the murky waters of Newtown Creek; maybe you’re a parent whose child is older now, giving you more free time to pursue your own interests; or maybe you’re someone else. No matter your reason, if you’re interested in getting involved with GWAPP, we want to hear from you!

There are numerous opportunities to volunteer from one-time to on-going projects. Below are a few examples:

Write for GWAPP: Op-Ed
Are you passionate about a particular waterfront or open space topic in North Brooklyn? Tell us and the whole neighborhood about it! Write an op-ed piece for us. isn’t all about us telling you, the readers, what to think about, we want our community and neighbors to tell us what’s important to them. Popular op-ed topics from the blog include Meeker Avenue Plumes, Greenpoint’s Homeless, and historic Greenpoint. All written by concerned, active Greenpoint and Williamsburg residents. And don’t worry if you’re not a perfect writer, we have editors!

Write for GWAPP: Ongoing
If you are an avid writer and want the opportunity to hone your skills on a regular basis, consider becoming a regular contributor to our site. You’ll work with the Online Content Editors to brainstorm ideas, you’ll attend community meetings and write recaps, and you’ll write weekly posts as part of an on-going series. Your posts will be read by thousands of residents across Brooklyn.

If you’re looking for something heartier that could be a portfolio piece, consider tackling a lengthier historical narrative of the issues GWAPP has faced in the past including the 129a Rezoning, fighting the Power Plants and more. These narratives will have a permanent home in our organization’s online archive.

Create for GWAPP:
You don’t just have to be good with words to help out with GWAPP. We’re always looking for people with an array of creative talents from graphic design, photography, videography, web development and more to assist in producing projects that will enhance the future narrative of GWAPP both online and in the real world. Let us know what skills you have and we’ll come up with an exciting and meaningful project idea together.

Represent GWAPP:
Occasionally, we do need people to carry the GWAPP banner in real life. During community events, we need responsible volunteers to table for GWAPP–meeting new neighbors, explaining our mission, and generally interacting with the public in a pleasant demeanor. Similarly, come learn more about GWAPP and then when you’re at your other community groups and an issue regarding the waterfront or open spaces arises, you can offer another view point.

The areas above are only a few suggestions on ways to volunteer. Truly, if you’re interested, reach out and we’ll find a way to incorporate you. We wouldn’t ever turn away someone who is interested in improving this community.
