Researchers Investigating Soil Contamination Brought By Sandy

Scientists from Vasser and Marist Colleges have begun taking samples of flooded soils in Greenpoint to investigate whether heavy metals, PCBs and other contaminants from Newtown Creek and surrounding industrial sites caused soil contamination in homes and businesses in low-lying areas. During Hurricane Sandy, many basements, yards and low-lying areas along the East River and Newtown Creek were flooded by the storm surge, raising concerns about whether these flooded areas are now contaminated.
