How to Use Your FREE Mulchfest Mulch!

by Ryan Watson on

This weekend, the Parks Department will be holding Mulchfest 2013, turning hundreds of thousands of pounds of Christmas trees into free mulch (last year 24,000 trees were recycled!). In North Brooklyn, McCarren Park will serve as a “chipping” and tree drop-off location and McGolrick Park is a tree drop-off location only (Saturday and Sunday; 10:00am – 2:00pm).

Using mulch maintains optimal levels of soil moisture, suppresses weed growth, provides insulation during winter to protect roots from low temperatures, can add nutrients to your the soil and help improve its structure. With so much free mulch here’s a few ideas on how to use it:

  • Take care of a street tree
  • Add it to your compost pile
  • Use it to cover your back yard
  • Utilize the fragrant piney aroma as a potpourri

Just remember to remove all ornaments from your tree and bring a bag to carry your mulch home. Happy Mulching!
