About Fall Tree Giveaways
This fall, New York Restoration Project (NYRP) will launch its largest iteration of fall tree giveaways. Kicking off October 13th, NYC property owners can stop by various events to pick up a tree—for free—to take home and plant in a yard, garden, commercial property, community garden, etc. within the five boroughs. With the help of local, eco-minded community organizations, NYRP will be giving out 100 trees per event, totaling 1,400 this fall.

The giveaways are part of NYRP’s efforts to reach out to homeowners to plant trees as part of the MillionTreesNYC initiative, a program launched in 2007 with a goal to plant and care for one million new trees across the city’s five boroughs by 2017. When complete, the initiative will have increased the NYC’s canopy by 20% and a giveaway is a way for New Yorkers to play a part. Aside providing cleaner air, planting trees have additional benefits to New Yorkers, including enhancing curb appeal, offsetting of climate change, cooling temperatures, and many others.

Although autumn is when trees shed their leaves planting trees in the fall is surprisingly very beneficial because the soil temperature and moisture promote healthy root growth which is critical to the overall health of a young tree, especially in an urban environment. The young tree will typically face less environmental stressors in the fall with the reduction of pests and more predictable weather. Trees planted in fall have up to a 50% greater root mass and thicker trunk than trees planted in spring, which guarantees a lush canopy year after year.

Those interested can view the schedule and register online to reserve a tree before the event at www.nyrp.org/MillionTreesNYC. An NYRP representative on site will explain how to plant and care for the tree.

I am really interested on the giveaway trees program. I know that the Queens are giving away trees recently. But I don’t know is there any trees give away for Brooklyn ?
