Welcome to the New GWAPP Website!by on
Welcome to the new GWAPP website! It’s been a bit of time since our last update, but thanks to a generous grant from the Hudson River Foundation, GWAPP is back and on track to better serve the Greenpoint and Williamsburg communities than ever before.
In Greenpoint, community activism is a way of life. When we encounter problems with our parks, challenges to the environment or unfulfilled promises from city leaders, our neighbors stand up together to ensure that our voices are heard and that action is taken. The mission of GWAPP and the purpose of this site is to galvanize the voices of our community to accomplish the goals of our member organizations for the betterment of the residents of North Brooklyn.
The News and Issues section of this site will keep you informed on current topics related to parks, waterfront and other open space issues. In the coming weeks, we will feature a variety of voices from community activists on topics such as the Meeker Avenue Plumes, the unfulfilled promises of Bushwick Inlet Park, and water quality issues in Newtown Creek.
Our Archive section provides a historical context of GWAPP’s successes in past campaigns. Whether detailing the defeat of two proposed power plants on the East River or the 2005 Rezoning Plan, this section will give readers a sense of where we are in relation to where we’ve been. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be publishing a series of narrative histories detailing the stories of these fights to give you a deeper insight into the issues of North Brooklyn.
Commit to Your Community – Get Involved!
As residents and citizens of North Brooklyn, you are at the forefront of this community. Our goal is to make this website a place of information and action, but we’ll need your help and input. This website will provide you an opportunity to educate, inform and update your neighbors and the community at-large on important issues that directly impact us all.
Is there a parks or open-space issue that you’re passionate and knowledgeable about? We want your voice to be heard! Become a contributor and get the word out about all those important issues affecting the residents of North Brooklyn.
Interested in showcasing an environmental or conservation topic that you’re passionate about? Create a HabitatMap to spotlight the locations related to your issue.
Are you hosting or know of an upcoming event that would be of interest to other North Brooklyn residents? Submit a calendar event!
Want to provide a quick update about an issue near you? Is there a problem in your local park that needs fixing? Having trash problems on your block or noticing unpleasant odors in the air? Provide a community news item and keep North Brooklyn residents aware of what’s happening around them.
Although much progress has been made, there is still a great deal of work to be done. Keep GWAPP and your neighbors informed about the issues you care about so that we can hold our state and local leaders accountable. Let’s work together to solve our problems and make our community the best place to live!
